Samples Collection and Biodiversity

Several scientific missions will be organised by the IFREMER (the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) in European territories to sample a variety of cone snail specimens: Conus consors cone snail species from geographically different areas and other Conus cone snail species will be collected to perform intra- and inter-species biodiversity studies.

Venom will be obtained by milking and used to assess venom protein biodiversity using venom mass fingerprinting. Afterwards most animals will be released in their natural environment. Venom gland and tissue extractions from a few animals brought back alive to Europe will be performed for transcriptomic, full chromosomic and genomic studies.
