The Department of Molecular Apidology at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences has, with Prof Jozef Simuth, a long-term and a well-established reputation in honeybee genomics and comparative genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology. Due to this know-how on functional genomics and proteomics of honeybee, the Department of Molecular Apidology was integrated as a partner group to the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin (Germany).

Key persons involved in the project:

Prof Jozef Simuth and Dr Katarína Bilikova have at their disposal a broad array of methodologies (technology of recombinant DNA, hybridisation techniques), available facilities for peptide and protein identification and have also at their disposal experimental apiary and in vitro anti-infectious assays for testing bioactive compounds against a panel of parasites, virus and pathogenic micro-organisms of medical and nutritional importance.
