The Institute of Molecular Cell Biology in Jena is specialised in the investigation of ion channels in recombinant expression systems and in mammalian cell lines. Using state-of-the-art electrophysiological methods, laser-scanning microscopy and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy as well as Ca2+ imaging, the group studies the structure and function of ion channel proteins and investigates in particular their modulation by toxins from scorpions and cone snails, also on ion channel chimeras.

Staff contributing to the project will be Prof S. H. Heinemann for project management, experiment design and data analysis, Dr E. Leipold for molecular biology of sodium channels, and A. Rossner will assist the project by her expertise in cell culture and transfection methods.
